Frequently Asked Questions:
1. In which services do volunteers work and what do they do?
Volunteers provide support to patients and staff, assisting with patient feeding, ice water delivery and clerical support; in a variety of patient care areas: Emergency & Day Surgery,etc. Volunteers contribute to fundraising services, such as the Gift Shop, raising money to purchase hospital capital equipment.
2. What is a volunteer's level of commitment?
Volunteers only work in areas in which staff have expressed a need for volunteer assistance. The interview will determine the appropriate service for you. Volunteers are asked to contribute 2-3 hours once a week in at least one service area. Volunteers are welcomed to switch service areas once a minimum of 6 months on one service has been completed. Services are available seven days a week between the hours of 7:30am and 10:00pm dependent on the service and site.
3. Can I do my 40 hour school requirement at the hospital?
Students interested in volunteering must be 15 years of age and be able to commit to 60 hours. Once the successful 60 hour commitment has been completed, at your request, you will be provided with a certificate or letter of recommendation. Documentation can only be issued once the mandatory 60 hours are completed.
4. Is a uniform required? How much does it cost?
Yes, volunteers are required to wear their uniform and photo id for their scheduled shift in the hospital. This required apparel is available at a cost of $20.00 for adults and $15.00 for co-op and student volunteers. Photo ids are provided free of charge.
5. Is parking free for volunteers?
Volunteers receive complimentary parking when attending their shift.
6. Is it possible to take vacations or be absent for a scheduled shift?
Yes, volunteers may take a vacation. The Volunteer Dept. should be notified in advance when a vacation or absence is taken.
