The role of the
Child Life Worker is to help children continue normal life patterns while in
hospital. They informally assess each child's needs, conduct pre-admission
tours, offer guidance and information for parents and caregivers, prepare
children for medical procedures or surgery and assist with behaviour
modification when necessary. They use a variety of toys, games, stickers,
crafts, books and movies to reward their young patients and to help them relax
and feel more at home. Crafts, for example, can take a child's mind off
pending surgery, and blowing bubbles can encourage deeper breathing and reduce
stress.
In some cases, a child may need diagnostic tests or other medical
procedures. The Child Life Workers use a hands-on approach to help the
child prepare for the experience - introducing them to the health professionals
who will be involved, showing the child how equipment is used or demonstrating
techniques such as applying a cast using a doll as a patient.
The Child Life Workers are available to offer information and advice about
how to prepare children for upcoming treatment. Normally, the Child Life
Workers provide community services, including conducting tours of the paediatric
department, holding public information sessions and supervising students who
work in the department as part of college placement programs.
