Laboratory Medicine

Currently there are over 100 Medical Laboratory Technologists and Medical Laboratory Assistants employed in the Laboratories at William Osler Heath Centre. There are a number of learning institutions across Canada which provide the MLT and MLA training programs, the closest being The Michener Institute of Applied Health Sciences and Mohawk College.Medical Laboratory Technologists specialize to provide services in the following Disciplines :

Clinical Chemistry
Conduct tests on blood and body fluids to detect chemicals, hormones and / or drugs.

Clinical Microbiology
Conduct tests on blood, body fluids and / or tissue samples to detect bacteria, fungi, viruses, and / or parasites.

Haematology
Conduct tests to measure blood cells and to detect diseases / disorders of the blood.

Transfusion Science
Conduct blood typing and blood compatibility tests.

Histology
Prepare samples of body tissue to aid in the microscopic detection and diagnosis of disease.

 Diagnostic Cytology
Screen cells taken from the body for the presence of cancer.

Flow Cytometry
Immunophenotyping of white and red blood cells with the purpose of categorizing leukemias, lymphomas and other disease states.

Although we work behind the scene, the Medical Laboratory Technologists and Assistants are an integral part in providing information.
